Still Winter
Porto, Winter 2021
Still Winter is a visual meditation on stillness, light, and solitude. Captured during the pandemic, a time when the city stood still, cloaked in fog and uncertainty. In that silence, I found myself returning to photography — and to a sense of self I had nearly forgotten. The streets were empty, as if Porto itself had taken a breath, pausing to reflect on all that had changed.
This series is about that gentle stillness, the quiet reflections of a city at rest. It’s a visual meditation on solitude, light, and the profound calm that comes from being present, even when everything else feels like it’s on pause.
Summer in Porto
Porto, Summer 2021
A series born from the warmth of Porto’s summer days, captured in the historic streets of Porto and the traditional neighborhood of Foz do Douro — places where the city’s local spirit still thrives. These images reflect the quiet joy of finding happiness in solitude, and embracing the gentle pace of summer light.
Summer in Porto is an invitation to slow down, to let life move at its own pace. There’s a beauty in Porto’s imperfections: the faded colors, the worn tiles, the crooked lines. It’s a reminder that we don’t have to polish every edge to feel at home.
Silver Coast
Santa Cruz and Peniche, 2022
The sea has always been my anchor—a place I turn to whether I’m joyful, lost, or somewhere in between. Growing up by the beaches of southern Brazil, I came to know the waves like old friends. They were always there, constant yet ever-changing, mirroring the ebb and flow of life itself.
In these photos, I wanted to capture the essence of that connection — the way the sea holds a sense of calm even when it’s fierce, and how it can make us feel small yet comforted. The gulls resting on rugged cliffs, the waves meeting the sand, and the lone figure walking along the shoreline — all of it reminds me of the delicate balance between solitude and companionship.
In Between
2018
There are moments in life when we feel suspended — caught between who we are and who we long to become. This series reflects that state of uncertainty, where the desire to break free meets the fear of leaving behind what feels familiar. It’s an exploration of being submerged within oneself, grappling with the tension between vulnerability and strength, isolation and expression.
About the Artist
Laís is a self-taught photographer and writer whose work explores the quiet, introspective moments of human experience. Her creative practice centers on capturing the balance between solitude and connection, vulnerability and strength. Drawing inspiration from a deep connection to nature and a sense of isolation that has accompanied her throughout life, she explores the interplay of light, texture, and emotion—creating images that feel both deeply personal and universally relatable.
Born and raised in southern Brazil and currently living in Portugal, Laís has always been drawn to storytelling, whether through words or visuals. Her upbringing in a small town in the Brazilian countryside led her to use the limitations of her reality, her sense of aloneness, and her restless curiosity as tools for creation. Her photography serves as a visual meditation, inviting viewers to pause and reflect on the subtle communication between the internal and external worlds. With a thoughtful and intuitive approach, Laís continues to explore how art can be both a mirror of the self and a bridge to others.
